Rushdown with a Phase 3 transformation · Phase 3: Beast Form / Broken Face

2017X is a speed killer who wants to stay on one target. His base form builds Top Speed by running, rolls through survivors with Spin Dash and marks a victim with Obsession for extra speed and shorter cooldowns near them. In Phase 3 he turns into Beast Form (also called Broken Face) and gets a completely new kit built around a ranged ground slam and grabs.

Verdict (B tier, release week v1.1): A fun two-form rushdown killer. Beast Form is scary, but the base form has trouble getting kills. See the tier list →

Abilities

Phases 1–2

  • Top Speed: Charged by running. Once full, a fast sprint that can M1 and shows every survivor.
  • Spin Dash: Rolling attack that damages on contact. Less than an M1, but skill-based.
  • Obsession: Marks one survivor. Near them, 2017X gets less stun time, more speed and shorter cooldowns.

Phase 3 (Beast Form)

  • Ground Slam M1: Ranged slam in front of him for 40 damage since v1.24 (35 at launch), against 35 for other killers' M1s.
  • Impatience (passive): Abilities play out faster.
  • Roar / Savage Jump / Vicious Grab: Reveal and slow nearby survivors, a charged pounce, and a grab that slams the survivor repeatedly.

Since the v1.24 update (October 18) every killer's basic attack (M1) does 35 damage, up from 20 at launch, and all abilities and M1s cost stamina. See the update log. Phase timing and the escape timer are covered in the escape timer guide.

How to survive 2017X

  • Use height. The base form has very little verticality.
  • If you are the Obsession target, stay away from your team so the buffs don't help him catch them too.
  • Respect the Phase 3 pounce. It closes distance faster than it looks.

How to play 2017X

  • Keep moving to build Top Speed, then use it to close the gap and M1 at speed. It also reveals every survivor.
  • Put Obsession on the survivor who keeps getting away. The bonuses only work while you're close to that survivor.
  • Spin Dash does less than an M1, so use it to finish off a survivor or to catch one who is trying to break away.
  • In Beast Form, your slam M1 hits for 40 at range (since v1.24). Use Roar to reveal and slow nearby survivors before a Savage Jump.

Why B tier

2017X is fun and has two kits, but the base form has little verticality and Obsession does less than it sounds like. Beast Form is a real threat, and the tester preview expects 2017X to be viable. Release-day reviews found the base kit hard to get kills with, so 2017X is weaker than the top three for most of the round.

FAQ

What is Broken Face?

It's 2017X's Phase 3 Beast Form. His M1 becomes a ranged ground slam for 40 damage (since v1.24), and he gets Impatience, Roar, Savage Jump and Vicious Grab.

Is 2017X good?

He's B tier on our list. Beast Form is strong, but reviewers found the base kit hard to get kills with, so most of the round is his weaker part.
